Wales

Since I have finally put up the photos for Wales, I think I will write the narration to go along with them. So, without further ado, here it is.

If you’ll remember, when we last left off, we had finally managed to reach our accomodations, the Winston Private Hotel. The folks there were very nice and accomodating of our late arrival from Manchester, even though I am sure they were shaking their heads and going “Americans!”. Not that I blame them. We really only had one day in Wales, so we didn’t want to waste it. We got up and went to downtown Mumbles and checked out the “beach”. As much as I loved Wales, the beach at Mumbles left me decidedly cold. Perhaps that was because it was basically a salt mud flat. Oh well, no problem. We had some brunch in Mumbles and wandered through the shops. At a kite shop near the beach, a nice lady talked our ear off about Arizona. It was nice that she was friendly, but we spent about 20 minutes too long there :). It is indeed a small world. After that we got in the Saab and headed off for Rhossili. As underwhelmed as we were with Mumbles beach, Rhossili was impressive. An amazing little village situated on a cliff at the southwestern tip of the Gower peninsula, Rhossili is just incredible. You walk down a path along some shear cliffs that fall off into the sea, with an amazing view of a beach several hundred feet below you. Off in the distance, waves crash the Wurm’s Head, sending spray a hundred feet in the air. Again, amazing. After that we decided to drive over to Cardiff, which is about 60 miles away. We figured we’d get some food there and maybe do a little shopping since a) JC had no luggage and b) Christi wanted to shop :). We tried a little pub, but they didn’t seem to be serving people, or at least not us… so we tried a little “greasy spoon” sort of cafe in a nearby mall and I actually tried the chicken curry. It was GOOD. I was impressed. Way better than I expected for a place like that. I guess the Brits (and Welsh) have learned a few things with that whole world empire of theirs. A long drive back and much cursing at traffic circles later and we were back in Mumbles and about ready to drop. However, we just had to try the bar in the hotel. I’m glad we did, because that was the best socializing we had the entire trip. The owner (I’m sorry, I’ve forgotten his name… I am bad with names) served us (and himself) in the bar. We spent several hours chatting and drinking and had a generally great time. Eventually the gentleman’s wife told him for about the 5th time that it was CLOSING time and we finished our drinks and staggered to bed. 🙂 Much fun. And JC will never forget the taste of Ginger Beer, which in this case was neither ginger, nor beer…
