Nebraska Football

For those who don’t know, I am a fan of Nebraska football. Why that should be when I went to Virginia Tech…? Well, there really isn’t a good reason except to say that I was inculcated early and often with Nebraska football from the time I was a toddler. 🙂

In this vein, I read a good quote today on ESPN.com:

“I am ready for cats to lie with dogs. I am ready for a Cubs-Red Sox World Series. I am ready to see Michelle Wie in The Masters, Adam Sandler in Hamlet and Ralph Nader in the White House. I have seen Nebraska shift to an empty backfield. I am ready to give snowballs a chance in hell.” – Ivan Maisel

For those who are not historians of college football, for the last 40 years or so, Nebraska has mostly run an offense predicated on the Power Option. This offense has the benefit of being very hard to defend against (assuming similar atheletic abilities on both sides), but it has the con of being fairly boring for the average fan to watch. Of course, Nebraska fans are not “average” fans. They watch Nebraska football because there is NOTHING else to watch in the state of Nebraska. No pro teams whatsoever. They could watch a guard pull on a toss sweep and appreciate the finesse it took to run a fullback trap. In this they…we… are anachronisms. Now however, finally, in 2004 Nebraska will run the West Coast offense. I can’t really say that I am happy about it. I liked the fact that Nebraska was differentif it was sometimes boring. Now they are
just like 80% of the college teams out there and like 95% of the pro teams. I will watch this first year with interest, but Nebraska just might wind up being much more boring than before.
